Manipur: Urgent hearing denied on plea against suspension of internet services; Supreme Court said this

The Supreme Court has declined an urgent hearing of a petition filed against the suspension of internet services in violence-hit Manipur. The court said that the hearing of the case is already going on in the High Court. There is no point in repeating the proceedings. Let it come before the regular bench.

 

The livelihood of people affected due to internet shutdown

Let us tell you that violence broke out against the demand for tribal reservation by the majority Meitei community in Manipur. Due to this violence which broke out on May 3, more than 90 people have died in the state so far. At the same time, the government has stopped internet services in the state as a precautionary measure. Normal life is being greatly affected due to the shutdown of internet services. In such a situation, lawyer Chongatham Victor Singh and businessman Myengbam James recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding the restoration of internet service. The petitioners say that their livelihood is being affected due to the internet shutdown in the entire state for almost a month. It has also been said in the petition that shutting down the internet is also against freedom of expression and freedom to do business.

Justice Aniruddha Bose said that the petition should be presented before the regular bench first. The High Court is hearing the matter, so there is no need to repeat the hearing. Let us tell you that the Manipur government has extended the internet ban issued in the state on Tuesday till June 10. The petition filed against this move of the government states that due to the shutdown of the internet, people are not able to talk to their families and near and dear ones. There is an atmosphere of fear because of this.
