Rajiv Gandhi Death Anniversary: Today, the 31st death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, PM Modi and Sonia Gandhi paid tribute

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 31st death anniversary is on Saturday. On this occasion, Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi and National General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi paid tribute to him by visiting his graveyard 'Veer Bhoomi'.

 

Remembering former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said his father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India.

 

Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter, 'My father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India. He was a kind and compassionate person, and a wonderful father figure to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of forgiveness and empathy. I miss him dearly and we both fondly remember the time we spent together.

 

Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot also paid tribute to the former prime minister at Delhi's Veer Bhoomi.

PM Modi has also paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. PM tweeted, 'Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary.

 

After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the command of Congress was taken over.

 

Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20 August 1944 in Mumbai. He was married to Sonia Gandhi in 1968. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are his children. Rajiv Gandhi took charge of the Congress in 1984 after the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 40 after taking office in October 1984. He served as the Prime Minister of India till 2 December 1989.

 

Born on 20 August 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
