During the fourth Test match between India and Australia in Melbourne, a controversy erupted when there was a quarrel with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pat Cummins came to bowl the 71st over and on the fifth ball of that over, Yashasvi decided to play a backward shot. The ball went into the hands of wicketkeeper Alex Carey and the Australian team appealed.

Australia has set a target of 340 runs for India to win. India did not have a good start and the team lost three wickets within just 33 runs. After this, Yashasvi and Pant together handled the innings. However, India suffered the fourth blow at a score of 121. Travis Head got Rishabh Pant caught by Mitchell Marsh. He could score 30 runs in 104 balls. Pant, along with Yashasvi, did not let any wicket fall for India in the second session, but in the third session, he lost concentration and lost the wicket in the pursuit of a big shot. Pant shared an 88-run partnership with Yashasvi.

The third umpire ignored the rule.

Yashasvi tried to play Cummins' short pitch ball on the leg side to fine leg. He missed and the ball went into the hands of wicketkeeper Carey. The on-field umpire did not give Yashasvi out, after which Cummins decided to take DRS. It was not clear in the replay whether the ball took the edge of Yashasvi's bat or not. After this, it was checked with the Snicko meter, but no movement was seen in the Snicko meter. Despite this, the third umpire overturned the on-field umpire's decision and declared Yashasvi out. This shocked everyone present there and legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who was present in the commentary box, also raised questions. In this way, India suffered the seventh blow at a score of 140. Yashasvi was out after scoring 84 runs.

What does the rule say?

According to the rule, in such cases, the third umpire checks the snicko meter and if there is movement in it, the batsman is given out. But in Yashasvi's case, the snicko meter was ignored. When nothing was clear in the replay, the decision on Yashasvi should have been given based on the movement of the snicko meter. When Yashasvi was playing the shot, no movement was seen in the snicko meter, which means that the ball did not take the edge of Yashasvi's bat and go into Carey's hands. Despite this, the third umpire Sharafudaula of Bangladesh declared Yashasvi out. Yashasvi was also not happy with this decision and he discussed it with the on-field umpire, but he had no option but to return to the pavilion.

Gavaskar-Pathan raised questions

When the third umpire overturned the on-field umpire's decision, Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan, who was commentating, were surprised and they raised questions about this decision on air. Gavaskar also cited the snicko meter and said that if the snicko meter does not show any movement, then it is proof that the ball has not taken the edge of the bat. At the same time, Irfan also agreed with Gavaskar.

Spectators shouted 'cheating-cheating'

More than 30,000 spectators present at the MCG were also surprised by the umpire's decision. Indian fans were very disappointed by this and started shouting cheating-cheating. Spectators kept shouting slogans for a long time after Yashasvi was out and kept making people realize how Yashasvi had been cheated.

Snicko meter was used in Rahul's case.

The same snicko meter that was ignored for Yashasvi was used as a parameter in KL Rahul's case. Actually, in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, Rahul was declared out with the help of a snicko meter. In that match, the ball went into the fielder's hands as soon as it hit Rahul's pad, but movement was seen in the snicko meter due to which Rahul was declared out, but the exact opposite happened in Yashasvi's case.
