As the Presidential election, the Vice-President's election is also a mere formality. According to the numbers, the victory of the BJP-led NDA candidate is certain. Eyes are fixed on what political bet the BJP plays in this election on the candidate's question. Like the presidential election, this election also faces the challenge of proving its solidarity before the opposition.
There is no competition between the NDA and the opposition in terms of numbers. BJP has the numbers to win elections on its own. The party currently has 303 members in the Lok Sabha and 95 in the Rajya Sabha. Seven members are yet to be nominated in the Upper House before this election. Usually, the nominated members get affiliated with the ruling party. Thus the number of BJP members in both the Houses of Parliament with 788 members becomes 405 (if all the nominated members are affiliated with the party). Then the party also has the support of three independent members in the Lok Sabha. Thus this figure is enough to make its candidate win.
NDA dominance in both houses
NDA dominates both the houses. The NDA has 336 members in the Lok Sabha with all its allies and three independents. While it has 111 members in the Upper House. Thus the number of MPs in favor of the NDA candidate will reach 454.
suspense on face
There is suspense over the BJP candidate. There was speculation that the BJP women's card may run in the Vice Presidential election. But by playing the tribal women card in the presidential election, the party has put brakes on this possibility. In such a situation, now Muslim or regional cards can be played.
Difficult to get a big win from Naidu
The NDA candidate's victory in the election is certain, but it will be difficult for the future candidate to win a bigger victory than the incumbent Vice President Naidu. Naidu got 516 votes and opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi got only 244 votes.
Petition challenging presidential election provisions dismissed
The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition challenging the presidential election provisions. The petitioner had challenged the provisions of nomination for the post therein. It had challenged the legal validity of requiring MPs or MLAs to be 50-50 proposers and seconders for nominations for the country's top post. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice JB Pardiwala refused to hear the petition of Bam Bam Maharaj Nauhatia and directed that it be withdrawn.
A total of 115 nominations were filed for the presidential election.
A total of 115 nominations were filed till Wednesday, the last day of filing nominations for the Presidential election to be held on July 18, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said. Out of these, 87 nominations are left for scrutiny. These nomination papers will be scrutinized on Thursday. Sources said that out of the total 115 nominations, 28 were rejected due to non-submission of electoral rolls with the names of the candidates. He said that the remaining 87 nominations are of 72 candidates which will be scrutinized on Thursday.
National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Draupadi Murmu and United Opposition's Yashwant Sinha are among those who filed nomination papers. Draupadi Murmu and Yashwant Sinha are the main candidates in the election. Apart from him, many common people have also filed their nominations for the top constitutional post in the country. These include a Mumbai slum dweller, a namesake of Rashtriya Janata Dal founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, and a professor from Delhi.
The Election Commission has made it mandatory for people to make nominations, at least 50 proposers and 50 seconders. The proposer and seconder must be members of the electoral college. In 1997, before the 11th presidential election, the number of proposers and seconders increased from 10 to 50, while the security deposit was also increased to Rs 15,000.
